From New York to Florida, Oregon to Arizona, Eb Eberlein has traveled, worked, and written songs. In 1969 he began hitching cross-country, always carrying an instrument and learning songs from people and the radio. Along the way he has been a cook, a taxi driver, a fire fighter, a logger, a handyman, and a teacher. He has backpacked, with and without pack animals, across much of Arizona and has worked in nearly every western state.
In the oral tradition of the songsters of the dustbowl era, Eb is an American folk singer. His songs document the land and how experiencing the land shapes people and their outlooks. He also shares intimately the disappointment and happiness of romance fulfilled or otherwise. Although he considers himself to be a performer rather than a musician, "a musician can read and write music, a performer is just comfortable sharing stories and songs whether around the campfire or in a concert hall." His side-of-the-road, self-taught style often shines with understated mastery.
His first recording, Voice in the Wilderness, represents a few of the songs that Eb has written over the last 22 years. "Basin," for Basin Mountain in the Adirondacks of New York, was first played on the summit of the peak in 1973 while "Get You a Stream" was written a-capella while hiking Kings Canyon and Sequoia Parks during the summer of 1994 when the recording project was nearly complete. Carrying guitar and harmonicas while on the trail allows his music to reflect very directly his joy in the world around us.
Eb has performed at open stages across the country over the years and has been the host of several sucessful such venues in his current home of Tucson. Host of the Tucson Musician's Showcase program on Community Radio KXCI for 5 years and a music mix programmer on occasion, he is also comfortable doing Emcee duties. He has been a featured performer at the Tucson Folk Festival since its second year in 1986 and has been well received at both the Charlot Hall Festival in Prescott, Arizona and the Encanto Park Folkways Festival in Phoenix. He has performed on stage with the likes of Carlos Nakai, Bill Morrissey, David Massingil, Jane Gillman, Guy Clark, and Odetta.
Voice in the Wilderness contains 16 total songs, 15 of which are original. He is joined by Molly Who of the Courage Sisters on two songs, and performs Terry Pollack's "Kiss the Highway" as a duo with Terry.
